What is the minimum number of pages to print a book?
In our printing press there is no mandatory minimum of pages, but for a book to be bound correctly, it must have at least 4 pages.
This is due to the physical characteristics of the paper and the type of binding.
Below we explain the recommended minimums according to each type of binding available.
General minimum to print a book
✔️ Absolute minimum: 4 pages
With 4 pages it is already possible to fold, cut and join the interior.
But depending on the type of binding, the recommended minimum may be higher.
Minimum pages according to binding
Each binding method has different requirements.
Here are the real minimums we must consider when printing your book.
1. Hot-Melt binding (glue)
It is the most used binding for books:
- Novels
- Essays
- Theses
- Manuals
- Books in small or medium runs
✔️ Recommended minimum: 24 pages
With fewer pages, the spine is too thin for the glue to adhere properly.
📌 If your file has fewer than 24 pages, the system suggests another binding such as stapled or wire-o.
2. Stapled binding (saddle stitch)
Ideal for:
- Magazines
- Booklets
- Small guides
- Informational material
✔️ Absolute minimum: 8 pages
✔️ Must be multiple of 4: 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 28…
This is due to how the sheets are folded.
📌 If a file has 10 or 14 pages, it must be adjusted to 12 or 16 pages to be stapled.
3. Wire-O binding
Used for:
- Notebooks
- Agendas
- Practical manuals
- Recipe books
- Technical books
✔️ Recommended minimum: 10 pages
This system is very flexible and allows working with very thin interiors.
4. Hardcover
Generally used in more formal projects:
- Special editions
- Economical photo books
- Compilations
- Collector's editions
✔️ Recommended minimum: 60–80 pages
The rigid cover requires a wide spine to be able to mount the cardboard and not deform.
What happens if your file has very few pages?
If your book has fewer pages than recommended, you can:
✔️ Option 1: Change the type of binding
Example: a 16-page book can be stapled, but not bound with hot-melt.
✔️ Option 2: Add internal pages
You can add:
- Blank pages
- Credits
- Index
- Acknowledgments
- Extra material
✔️ Option 3: Convert it into a brochure or booklet
If it is very thin, it is produced as a booklet, not as a book.
