What is the minimum number of pages to print a book?
In our print shop there is no mandatory minimum number of pages, but in order for a book to be able to bind correctly, must have at least 4 pages.
This is due to the physical characteristics of the paper and the type of binding.
Below we explain the recommended minimums for each type of binding available.
🟪 General minimum to print a book
✔️ Absolute minimum: 4 pages
With 4 pages it is already possible to fold, cut and join the inside.
But depending on the type of binding, the recommended minimum may be higher.
🟪 Minimum number of pages according to the binding
Each binding method has different requirements.
Here are the actual minimums to consider when printing your book.
🟩 1. Hot-Melt Binding (gluing)
It is the most commonly used binding for books:
- Novels
- Testing
- Thesis
- Manuals
- Books in small or medium print runs
✔️ Minimum recommended: 24 pages
With fewer pages, the spine is too thin for the glue to adhere properly.
📌 If your file has less than 24 pages, the system suggests another binding such as stapling or wire-o.
🟩 2. Saddle stitch binding
Ideal for:
- Magazines
- Fascicles
- Small guides
- Information material
✔️ Absolute minimum: 8 pages
✔️ Must be a multiple of 4: 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, 28...
This is due to the way the leaves are folded.
📌 If a file has 10 or 14 pages, it will need to be adjusted to 12 or 16 pages to be stapled.
🟩 3. Wire-O binding
Used for:
- Notebooks
- Agendas
- Practical manuals
- Recipes
- Technical books
✔️ Minimum recommended: 10 pages
This system is very flexible and allows working with very thin interiors.
🟩 4. Hardcover
Generally used in more formal projects:
- Special editions
- Inexpensive photo books
- Compilations
- Collector's editions
✔️ Minimum recommended: 60-80 pages
The hard cover requires a wide spine so that the cardboard can be mounted and does not warp.
🟪 What if your file has very few pages?
If your book has fewer pages than the recommended minimum, you can:
✔️ Option 1: Change binding type
Example: a 16-page book can be stapled, but not hot-melt bound.
✔️ Option 2: Add internal pages
You can add:
- Blank pages
- Credits
- Index
- Acknowledgments
- Extra material
✔️ Option 3: Turn it into a brochure or booklet
If it is too thin, it is produced as a booklet, not as a book.
